Topic Disussion 4 (Final Discussion)

Attached here is a comic strip entitled "Rumors, lies and innuendo spread far, wide, and fast on the Internet." taken from "Introduction to Mass Communication: Media Literacy and Culture" by Stanley Baran, pg 324.

Do you often take what is on the Internet as truth without thinking much about it? If yes, why? If no, why? Discuss this in your own words.

  1. in my opinion , not every thing over internet is taking by true , because internet now is like open for every one to write any information without any resource , thats why most of the universities when u write something from internet it should be article with good author , any one can open blog and write whatever he/she want without any resource , in the same time information now over internet is going bigger and bigger every day . every day there is new websites , every day there is new bloggers .

foe example : wikipedia.com !! even its very big encyclopedia but because its can edited from any one .. people dont trust and believe every thing from that site.

  3. From my point of view, everything in the internet can either be true or false. This is because anyone can write down information freely. However, this creates terrible consequences for people.

Some internet users believed everything in the internet to be true. For example, some gamers believed that a new video game going to come out just because of a rumour, which most of the time are not true.

Fortunately, some users are smart enough to check the source before taking the information they gained for granted.

  4. Throughout all this years, I don't really believe what that is on the internet as truth. But, sometimes I believe it if the information sounds reasonable. Everyone get influenced by the internet easily, especially the advertisement in the internet, People will either prefer the things promoted by the advertisement or against it. Thus, it will eventually create a lot of chaos among the people.Internet can give us the information we want if we use it properly, but at the same time it can also lead us to wrong conception too if we are totally over on what the internet had told us. In my opinion, one should think whether the information given are believable before making any decisions.

Yes, everything that is written in internet, for example Wikipedia that you had mentioned could have been edited by many ways,it could be taken from other people’s opinion, or blogs etc. Internet sometimes could not be trusted fully 100% as people could have give the wrong information which leads people to misunderstood the entire thing.

  6. No. Because in my point of view, the information provided from the internet can be posted by any person around the world. Besides, some of the information might be written by an inexperience person, who are posted the information based on their opinion and not supported by facts and prove. So the information given will become inaccurate as well.

I agreed with what you had written about sometimes the information from the internet sounds so reasonable and we might become so easily to believe it. It is important that before we take the information, we shall check the source of the information whether it can be trusted or not.

Yes, I agree with you. Although we aware that information from the internet cannot be fully trusted but still have people believing all the information from the internet and become an internet victim. For example, Lucky draw contest that send into email saying that you are been selected as a winner, or a web pages sending by an organization that stated represent certain Bank need to update account information and more. As a viewer, we shall be careful with the information provided in the internet and shall not believed everything before checking the source.

also sometimes u can't trust the bigs sites , coz recently most of these sites start look for collect more advertisements so the news start to be not really true, and we know how the newspapers make every thing so big than itself . even the copyright on the internet is just like image , any one can take other words , and any one can change the content like wikipedia .

I agreed with what you had said, informations from the internet could be written by anyone as you can see that there are a lot of internet link resources around us nowadays.
Some people would have tried to earn money by posting false information on the internet to deceived the consumers. Therefore, advertisement from the internet should be proven that it is safe and useful so it will not cause any misunderstanding among the consumers.

  12. i believe that not everything on the internet is a fact or based on true information. because everyone can fake these information in the internet and not like television that have alot of legal procedures. so its very rare for me to consider an information from the internet is true unless its from a very trusted website such as the news website ALJAZEERA or the university website and similar of these website that no one can write there besides the authorized to do so. but beside that we will always see those who just fake websites and manipulate information.

  13. To Shen Bao:
I totally agree with you, because most of the time the fake information is all about things that don't make sense and sometime its exaggerated. so for us to get the best and most truthful information we just need to have some common sense and think if this is actually true or not, we also need to see the website and whether its trust worthy or not.

  14. To ara-bee:

although wikipedia is a website that anyone can freely what he wants, fortunately it carries an objective which is to collect the most truthful information from everyone who knows, so even if someone faked an information over there, there will defenetly be another one come after him to fix it.

  16. No,I don not think everything on the internet are true. All the information or resources on the internet are coming from everywhere like private, public or government networks. Some of the information are true but others not. We can not consider everything is right. For example, people can use the internet to do false advertising or people can use e-mail to fraud others by saying that they got serious problems that need money to help them. So as you can see, internet is a way to receive every messages which is not always right. You have to think before you believe it.

  17. TO ara-bee :
I agree with your idea about we should not see everything as true on the internet because not all the massages posted on the internet are trusted. So we should think carefully before we start believing.

I totally disagree with you on the big website because they have Program of protection against the theft of information like bank you can not take any information of another personal account.
the wikipedia is a website but the personal can exchange his information with another person.

I agree with you. Unlike television, informations from the internet can come from anywhere and anyone. However, not all trusted websites can actually be trusted. Sites like wikipedia can have some false information since it editable by anyone.
